2020: Year in Review

What a year it has been! As 2020 draws to a close, we can’t help but reflect on the journey this year has been. This year has presented many challenges, but taught us invaluable lessons along the way.

At the end of 2019, Social Media Camp announced new ownership, Tami Tate. Tami invested in rebranding Social Media Camp and sparked inspiration for what this event and community could be. We headed into 2020 inspired and so excited to be hosting the 11th annual Social Media Camp in Victoria, BC.

Social Media Camp is Canada’s largest social media conference, bringing together industry innovators and influencers to spark conversation through a series of interactive sessions and inspiring speakers. We spent months gathering a group of inspirational speakers we could not wait to learn from.

Unfortunately, back in March we announced the cancellation of our 2020 Social Media Camp due to COVID-19. We cannot begin to tell you the heartbreak we felt. We used this time to take pause and grieve the loss of this event we had poured ourselves into.

We came away with the realization that during a pandemic, Social Media was more important than ever. With the lack of in-person events and networking, social media is the place we could connect with our community and provide them the knowledge and resources they need. We invested in new ways to not only connect with but educate our audience.

We launched SMC Club in May. SMC Club is a place for our community to come together and learn, year round. With a unique theme each month, we set out to create content that would spark conversation and help small businesses grow.

While SMC Club has become our pride and joy, we knew we needed to create more ways for our community to learn remotely. This year provided financial hardship for many, so in September of this year we launched our blog. This is a free way for us to provide valuable information and strategies to help our audience grow!

We are now ending 2020 with over 115 SMC Club Members, an engaged Social Media following, and a community of supporters we could not have survived this year without. While this year brought us many challenges and we used the word “unprecedented” more times than we could count, we are finishing it feeling an immense amount of gratitude.

Our 2020 Takeaway: Community is Everything.

We began 2020 with the goal of teaching our community at a physical conference, and are ending it realizing SMC is more than a conference. We are a community dedicated to helping small businesses grow online using social media. Whether we gather virtually or in-person, we will continue to show up for all of you, and give you the tools you need to grow with us.

Happy New Year & See you in 2021!
